This policy explains what personal information I collect when you subscribe to my newsletter or visit katherineouellette.com, how I use it, and the choices you have. In this policy, “I” and “me” mean Katherine Ouellette.

What information I collect

Information you give me

• Your email address (required) and first name (optional) when you sign up.

• Your answer to “Why are you signing up?” (writer, reader, or fan), if you choose to answer.

• Your confirmation that you agree to receive emails and that you are at least 16 years old.

• Anything you send me when you reply to an email or contact me.

Information collected automatically

• When you sign up, my email service provider (Brevo) records the date and time, the form you used, and often your IP address. This serves as my record of your consent.

• When you open or click links in my emails, my email service provider (Brevo) records that activity, along with basic device and email app information.

• When you visit my website, Google Analytics and Squarespace may collect information such as pages visited; links clicked; time on site; browser, network, and device type; web pages you visited prior to coming to this website; approximate location; and cookie identifiers.

I do not collect payment information or sensitive personal information through my website or newsletter.

How I use your information

• To send you the free YA reading list and my newsletter, which includes writing and editing tips, and updates on my publishing journey.

• To tailor content to readers and writers.

• To understand which emails are useful to you (open and click statistics) and how visitors use my website (Google Analytics).

• To reply to your messages.

• To keep records of your consent and honor unsubscribe requests.

• To protect my newsletter and website from spam and abuse, and to meet legal obligations.

I do not sell your personal information, and I do not share it with third parties for advertising.

Who I share information with

I share information only with service providers who help me run my newsletter and website, and only for those purposes:

• Brevo, my email service provider, which stores my subscriber list and sends my emails. Brevo’s privacy policy is available at brevo.com/legal/privacypolicy/.

• Squarespace, which hosts my website. Squarespace’s privacy policy is available at https://www.squarespace.com/privacy/.

• Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, which helps me understand how visitors use my website. Google’s privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can opt out of Google Analytics by installing Google’s Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

I may also disclose information if required by law or to protect my rights or the safety of others.

How I protect your information

I use reasonable safeguards, including two-factor authentication on my email and website accounts, unique passwords, limited access to my subscriber list, encrypted (HTTPS) connections, and reputable service providers. I do not keep copies of my subscriber list on personal devices. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, so I cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affecting your information occurs, I will notify you and any required authorities as the law requires.

How long I keep your information

I keep your subscriber information in Brevo for as long as you are subscribed to my newsletter. If you unsubscribe or ask me to delete your data, I will remove your personal information, except that I keep your email address on a suppression list so I do not email you again, along with consent and unsubscribe records for as long as needed to demonstrate compliance. I keep email engagement data (opens and clicks) in Brevo until you unsubscribe. Your anonymized website browsing data in Google Analytics is retained for 14 months.

Your choices and rights

• Unsubscribe anytime using the link in the footer of every email, or at https://katherineouellette.com/unsubscribe.

• Access, correct, or delete the personal information I hold about you. To request the deletion of your website analytics data, please send me the value of the “_ga” cookie from katherineouellette.com in your browser. (Here are instructions on how to find your cookie information.) Since Google Analytics doesn’t store your email or IP address, I can’t identify your particular analytics data without it.

Children’s privacy

My newsletter is for people 16 and older. It is not directed to children under 16, and I do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child under 16 has subscribed, please contact me and I will delete the information promptly.

Changes to this policy

I may update this policy from time to time. I will change the effective date at the top, and if the changes are significant, I will notify subscribers by email or with a notice on my website.
